Iris with butterfly emerging from cocoon and flying away memorial tattoo

Placement: ShoulderComments: This was the customer's first tattoo. It's a memorial for her mother who has passed away. She is part Native American and she wanted a representation of a folk legend she had heard of butterflies guiding spirits to the afterlife. The iris flower also has an important meaning in this tattoo. Irises are named after the Greek word for rainbow, because they come in so many colors. The Greek goddess, Iris, was the personification of the rainbow and was considered to be a bridge between the Earth and the Heavens. She was said to guide women to the afterlife. People would frequently plant irises on woman's grave sites to summon her to guide their loved one home.
